Meet Our Member - Beth Henkle

Food Shelf Assistant

AC-logo JPEGBeth grew up in Westminster West, Vermont. Since graduation from Bard College in 2011, She has worked in Vermont, New Orleans, and the Free State, South Africa. Most of her work has been in sports based youth development. She led volunteers coaching soccer in South Africa for three winters (South African summers) with a small nonprofit called SheWinS (Sport Helping to Empower Women in South Africa). Last year she served as an AmeriCorps with Up2Us Sports, where I coached in New Orleans implementing sports based youth development. Beth is excited to return to Vermont and serve the community I grew up in. She worked at Walker Farm in Dummerston for several years and am interested in food access and food security. Beth is interested to learn more about these topics through my service at the Groundworks Food Shelf.

What is a typical day like in your AmeriCorps position?

I work in the food shelf, stocking the shelf, keeping things clean and organized, and answering any questions volunteers or clients have. I also get to visit the Foodbank occasionally to pick up food orders and salvage from their selection of donated goods.

Why did you join VHCB AmeriCorps?

I think it's important to serve the community you are a part of. This opportunity has provided me with the ability to return home for a bit and to get to understand more about the realities of where I live. I have also become aware of various other services and projects going on the area that I wouldn't otherwise have known about.

What is the highlight of serving at your site?

I love the feeling of being part of an organization that has such an impact on the community I live in.

What would you like other people to know about serving with VHCB AmeriCorps?

If you serve with VHCB AmeriCorps, you'll meet really interesting people doing really interesting work. You'll also  learn a lot about the community you're serving. It's a great opportunity to explore your interests and get some experience in the housing and/or conservation world.

VHCB AmeriCorps is a program of the
Vermont Housing & Conservation Board.
