Meet Our Member - Chelsea Boston
Chelsea is the AmeriCorps member at the Good Samaritan Haven in Barre, where she serves as a Resource Specialist and Case Coordinator. She started at the Good Samaritan Haven as a college intern, and couldn't get enough! At her supervisor's suggestion, she applied for the AmeriCorps position. She was happy to be accepted into the program, and now serves full-time in addition to attending her college courses.
What is a typical day like in your AmeriCorps position?
There is no typical day at the Good Samaritan Haven--and that's the way I like it! My position covers a wide array of activities: meeting with residents to connect them to services, participating in art projects with them, accompanying them to apartment showings, and so much more. One of the things I love about my position is that it is ever-changing, and offers so much opportunity for creative thinking.
Why did you join VHCB AmeriCorps?
I joined VHCB AmeriCorps because I was already interning at the Good Samaritan Haven and wanted to continue participating in the work that they do. Because they did not have the funding to offer my a paid position through the shelter, they suggested I apply for the AmeriCorps position.
What has surprised you most about serving with AmeriCorps?
One thing that has surprised me about serving with AmeriCorps is the vast array of skills I have learned. I knew that I would gain some knowledge through the course of my term, but I have learned so much more than I could have imagined. This experience has been invaluable in furthering my education and professional experience.
What is the highlight of serving at your site?
The highlight of serving at my site is the Bingo night I host every other Thursday. I put out desserts, throw on a pot of coffee, and my residents play for various prizes. Almost half the shelter plays together, and they get really into it. They all get really competitive during the game, but always cheer for whoever wins. I think the camaraderie is really cool.
What would you like other people to know about serving with VHCB AmeriCorps?
I would like other people to know that AmeriCorps is time-consuming, but worth every second
