Meet Our Member: Nate Hoover
Nate Hoover, Home Education Coordinator at the Champlain Housing Trust
As the Home Education Coordinator at the Champlain Housing Trust, Nate helps to administer home buyer and rental education courses. The goal of these programs is to teach the financial skills and other habits necessary for successful home ownership or tenancy. Nate is currently enrolled in the Master of Public Administration program at the University of Vermont and has a bachelors degree in Urban Studies from the College of Wooster. When not busy with schoolwork or AmeriCorps service, Nate enjoys hiking in the mountains, fishing, and reading.
Why did you join VHCB AmeriCorps?
It’s important to me to be doing meaningful work. I really admire the services the Champlain Housing Trust provides to the community. Additionally, I wanted a chance to learn more about housing and how housing fits into the bigger picture of urban development.
What are you learning or gaining out of your service?
I’ve learned a ton of credit and money management skills! Also, I have learned quite a bit about the home buying process. I’ve improved my presentation and public speaking skills and learned how to conduct one on one financial mentoring appointments.
What’s the best thing about serving at your site?
The best thing about serving at my site is the support I receive not only from my department but the entire organization. The Champlain Housing Trust has hosted AmeriCorps members for many years now and it is clear that the organization values our contributions.
What would you like other people to know about serving in AmeriCorps?
AmeriCorps is a great way to gain firsthand experience doing meaningful work. You will make important networking connections not only in your office, but with other community agencies as well.
