Update: Due to inclement weather, today's activities have been delayed until noon. VHCB AmeriCorps members should check their email for up to date event information.

On Monday, January 19, 28 Vermont Housing & Conservation AmeriCorps members are taking part in a national day of service in honor of Martin Luther King Day. VHCB AmeriCorps members are making this holiday “a day on, not a day off,” by joining with several Upper Valley area nonprofits to complete community service projects.

“We have been participating in the MLK Day of Service for many years. We are looking forward to serving in the Upper Valley this year and hope to have a positive impact on the community,” said Francis Sharpstene, Director of VHCB AmeriCorps.

Service projects will take place with the Upper Valley Haven, WISE of the Upper Valley, COVER Home Repair, the Montshire Museum of Science, Twin Pines Housing Trust, and the Vermont Institute of Natural Science. The Upper Valley Haven will host members in cooking meals for shelter guests and sorting donations. Members will hold a donation drive for WISE at the West Lebanon Walmart from 9:15-12:15. Volunteers will be collecting basic care products such as toothpaste and shampoo to be given to individuals fleeing their homes due to domestic violence. At VINS, volunteers will help staff develop a new orienteering course to benefit visitors from schools and summer camps. The Montshire Museum of Science will host volunteers for a cleaning and snow removal project.  The Twin Pines Housing Trust AmeriCorps member will lead volunteers in assisting a pair of new home owners in setting up and unpacking their residence.

Rob Schultz, Executive Director of COVER Home Repair said, “COVER Home Repair is deeply grateful to have worked with VHCB and VHCB AmeriCorps for years.  The AmeriCorps Members that have served at COVER add immeasurably to our mission and to our community.  We are especially glad to have a crew of VHCB AmeriCorps members working at the ReCover Store this Martin Luther King Jr. Day!  What a good way to celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.!”
