Committee On Temporary Shelter (COTS)
Family Services Program
CHILDREN’S PROGRAM SPECIALIST
half-time


  • Responsibilities: To provide educational and recreational opportunities and activities for children. To work closely with parents, shelter staff, case managers, schools, and other local agencies to address the special needs of children that are in shelter.

    • Assist children in learning skills necessary to successfully build/maintain
    friendships and succeed in school while living in shelter.
    • Provide opportunities for parents to develop effective parenting skills.
    • Work closely with shelter staff to recruit, train, and utilize volunteers.
    • Maintain records of activities, children served, and other data necessary for
    statistical purposes.
    • Confer regularly with Shelter Coordinator to review programs, discuss events, and
    incidents.
    • Participate in staff meetings.

    Minimum Qualifications:
  • Two years relevant experience or a combination of education and experience from which needed skills have been acquired.
  • Knowledge of developmental needs of children who are experiencing major life stress.
  • Capacity to provide educational and recreational activities to children of diverse ages and abilities.
  • Comfortable working independently and as a member of a cooperative team.
  • Ability to coordinate volunteers.
  • Client and solution oriented.
  • Good crisis intervention and mediation skills.
  • Computer literate.

    Start and End Dates: Start September 24, 2007 and end August 22, 2008

Benefits: $6,790 stipend, $2,362 education award at end of term, health insurance, childcare if state eligible, training opportunities.
