Youth Outreach & Program Coordinator
quarter-time (450 hours)

Highgate is a lower-income neighborhood in Barre made up of 113 federally subsidized 1- 2- and 3-bedroom apartments, and 7 low-moderate income units. Highgate Non-Profit (HNP) is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1989 with the goal of maintaining Highgate Apartments as desirable, affordable housing. Our mission is to collaborate with the Highgate residents, the larger Barre community, and others to enhance the quality of life in the neighborhood. More than 50% of the population at Highgate is under the age of 18, so a large part of our efforts in neighborhood quality of life must be directed towards the youth.

Responsibilities (Essential): The Youth Outreach and Program Coordinator will be responsible for planning, developing, and running the youth related outreach and programs in the neighborhood. This will include:

  • Building positive, trusting relationships with the neighborhood youth through door-to-door outreach and informal interactions.
  • Conducting pre and post surveys with youth about what services/programs they would like to see in the neighborhood.
  • Networking and collaborating with other youth service organizations in the Barre area to involve Highgate youth in their programs as well as bring some of their programs on-site.
  • Developing the on-site after school program at the Highgate Learning Center and the summer youth program. Organizing programs, recruiting volunteers to run programs, and doing outreach via fliers, newsletters, and door-knocking to get youth participation.
  • Overseeing the Learning Center library. Recruiting and supporting volunteers.
  • Creating a youth programs database to track volunteers, presenters, youth involved, etc.

Other Responsibilities: The member should expect to directly run some of the programs when volunteers are unavailable. Creativity and innovation are welcome and encouraged, so that our program can be expanded keeping in mind the goal of improving neighborhood quality of life for the youth.

Skills, Knowledge, and Qualities necessary: Experience and comfort interacting with youth and people living in poverty is crucial to the success of the member. Good listening and communication skills on all levels – with youth, supervisors, other professionals – are essential. Strong organizational skills are important. Familiarity with area agencies and resources would serve the Americorps members well.

Supervision and Support: The Community Services Coordinator will supervise and support the member. Support will include training and information about area programs, as well as ideas for outreach methods. The relationship will be one of sharing and supporting ideas, projects, and work.

Start and End Dates: June 2008 – August 22, 2008

Benefits:  $3,395 (quarter-time) stipend, $1,250 education award at end of term, childcare if state eligible, training opportunities.
