AMERICORPS POSITION DESCRIPTION


JOHN GRAHAM SHELTER, VERGENNES
Shelter Assistant
full-time

Responsibilities:
  • Identify and reach out to homeless individuals and families to build trusting relationships in order to foster empowerment and assist with transition from homelessness to housing.
  • Assist with intake process, forms and recordkeeping as needed.
  • Build trust and self esteem with clients through daily interaction via one on one and group activities.
  • Encourage clients to engage with case management services.
  • Perform preliminary assessment of client needs and priorities and make appropriate referrals.
  • Act as an advocate in the community and assist clients with access to the services.
  • Provide/ or help clients access transportation to necessary appointments or services.
  • Model positive, constructive behavior for the clients.
  • Provide consistent on-going support to help clients become as self sufficient as possible.
  • Perform outreach to clients who are homeless or marginally housed.
  • Work with case managers to provide coordinated services to clients.
  • Record donations and service transactions as needed.
  • Assist with volunteer recruitment and with supervision of volunteer activities.
  • Develop working knowledge of local resources and service providers.
  • Help coordinate educational, social events and volunteer opportunities.
  • Carry out responsibilities as deemed appropriate by supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications: Two years relevant experience or a combination of education and experience from which needed skills have been acquired:
  • Compassion and understanding;
  • Good communication and advocacy skills;
  • Ability to deal effectively with a variety of clients as well as others outside the agency;
  • Knowledge of crisis intervention and supportive counseling skills;
  • Ability to analyze problem situations and focus on resolving them with clients;
  • Knowledgeable of client population and their issues;
  • Strong computer skills appreciated.
Start and End Dates: September 24, 2007 to August 22, 2008

Benefits: $12,825 Stipend (pre-tax), $4725 education award (pre-tax) at end of term, health insurance, childcare is state eligible and numerous and diverse training opportunities.
