Morningside Shelter, Brattleboro

Mission and Position Objective:
Morningside Shelter’s primary goal is to provide emergency shelter in conjunction with support services to persons in their search for permanent housing and employment. A second goal is to assist by referral to local supporting agencies such as mental health, substance abuse financial aid and counseling. The AmeriCorps project will target homeless participants to increase their ability to find adequate housing and employment opportunities.

Responsibilities:
Successful applicant will be involved in several of the activities listed below. The exact mix will be a function of what is most needed for the shelter and the specific talents and interests of the individual.
* Participate in all AmeriCorps programs, CNCS, and VTCNCS required trainings and events
* Submit weekly timesheets
* Meet weekly with supervisor
* Create periodic progress reports
* Learn the philosophy and mission of the Morningside Shelter
* Assist with the development of participants' resumes
* Assist with employer skills matching
* Develop training materials and provide training on resume preparation, proper interview techniques and apparel choices
* Develop an apartment readiness program designed to assist individuals and families with housing placement
* Run play and activity programs with resident children.
* Learn help update and maintain HMIS record keeping system
* Assist Case Worker/Advocates in a variety of services provided to our clients

 Minimum Qualifications:
* Must be 17 years old
* Must be a United States Citizen, U. S. National, or Resident Legal Alien
* Interested in working with homeless with economic disadvantages
* Ability to assist individuals and families in developing basic survival skills
* Compassionate/caring background
* Ability to work with clients who have substance abuse/mental illness
* Computer literate, particularly in database management preferred

Start and end dates: September 24, 2007 – August 22, 2008

Benefits for Full Time: (1,700 hours) $12,825 living stipend, $4,725 education award, basic health insurance, childcare if state eligible, and diverse training opportunities.
