Vermont Institue of Natural Science, Manchester Center
Environmental Educator
half-time-time 

The Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS) is looking for a full-time AmeriCorps member to fill a service opportunity based at our regional office in Manchester, Vermont. VINS is a nonprofit, statewide organization dedicated to protecting Vermont’s natural heritage through education and research designed to engage individuals and communities in the active care of their environment. We are seeking dynamic, motivated applicants who love teaching people about the natural environment, enjoy outdoor physical work, and are interested in community service.

The Environmental Educator will help with a wide array of projects in environmental education and land stewardship, including:

  • Nature Education Programming: Develop and offer public programs to individuals of all ages including school groups, adults, families, attendees of after school or home school programs, and tourists, among others, at the discretion of the VINS/Manchester Education Director. Learn and deliver high quality and professional VINS outreach programs to a variety of local audiences. Develop and co-teach camp programs.
  • In addition, the member will contribute to other related projects of the VINS/Manchester office, as directed by the supervisor. 

Key Responsibilities:

Teaching natural history programs to children and adults; leading school field trips, nature walks, & other environmental education programs; helping develop, revise and/or evaluate educational programs, materials, and displays; teaching summer camp programs; representing VINS at community events and fairs; assisting with routine trail maintenance, including removal of brush and fallen trees; installing and cleaning out water bars; representing VINS in a professional manner; communicating with staff at Equinox Resort about programs and trails activities, as directed by supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:

Start and End Dates: September 24, 2007 –August 22, 2008

Benefits: $6,790 living allowance (sick leave, vacation and holidays included), a $2,362.50 education award (pre-tax) and health insurance for at least 20 hours/week of service over an 11-month period
