BRATTLEBORO -- The community will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day in a variety of ways this year.

One volunteer organization is bringing three special events to the area and residents are invited to reflect on the legacy of King and view the art of children and their impression of the man.

The three events are being hosted by the area's six AmeriCorps volunteers as part of the organization's National Day of Service.

"Before I got into a career, I wanted to do something to make a difference," said Abby Fletcher of Putney, a 23-year-old volunteer in Brattleboro. "It's especially nice to be doing it in the community I was raised in.

The other volunteers are from as far away as Boston and Oregon, she said. They also wanted to do something prior to a career, said Fletcher. Many of them wanted to get experience in a nonprofit atmosphere and are working with area children.

Volunteers will be at Latchis Theater 4, Jan. 21, between 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to conduct interviews and record stories, on videotapes, about King.

Eventually, said Fletcher, the recordings will be shown on the area's community channel, BCTV.

Also at Latchis 4, the artwork of the youth of Brattleboro Housing Authority and Windham Housing Trust, between the ages of 5 and 14, will be on display. The showing is called "Peace Prints" and is inspired by King. The display can also be seen at the Welcome Center on I-91 in Guilford, the community rooms at Sam Elliot Apartments, Hayes Court and Melrose Terrace.

And at Morningside, volunteers will be preparing and serving a lunch for the residents, also Jan. 21. They also plan to throw some lasagna in the oven for dinner.
